GCCB Recommends the Top 5 Canadian Monster Movies

We did Zombies last week. Now we take it up a notch and really bring on the scares for an an afternoon lockdown monster-movie marathon. Nobody does monsters like Canadians. Sure, you can roll out the classic Dracula and Frankenstein monster every few years, but we put that little spin on all the good things that hide in the closet and under the bed and make that noise just as you turn out the lights. Here are our recommendations for a really fun, creature-feature filled, lockdown afternoon.

The Gate - 1987

This is a VHS cult classic that is really cool once it gets going. Two 12 year olds release pure evil from a pit in their backyard, which leads to demons, rocket launchers, corpses in walls and mass destruction. Shot in King City, Ontario, and the first pic of actor Steven Dorff.

End of The Line-2007

Although hallucinations, the monsters in this subway based fright pic are really creepy and scary. This is a great horror movie with an out-of-the box original premise.

Monster Brawl - 2011

Monster Brawl is just plain fun. Take all the classic monsters you love, put them in the ring, and let them duke it out WWE style! Add Dave Foley from Kids inThe Hall and some other fun B-Celebs for good measure to round out the ringside mayhem. Yes, it's as crazy as it sounds.

Ginger Snaps-2000

What happens when you combine teenage angst together with the curse of the werewolf? You get a clever, well written werewolf tale that offers more than your run of the mill teen scream-fest. Sharp, smart and funny.

Splice - 2009

Splice's amazing monster combined with it's original take on science -gone-wrong, would give Dr. Frankenstin the chills. Sarah Polley and Adrian Brody's performances solidify the scares.

What goes well with with a good old Canadian Quarantine Monster-Mash-Marathon? Donut Monster of course! Donut Monster out of Hamilton, Ontario, put their own special small batch from scratch touch on the classic favourite. Check them out and all their unique Donuts-gone-right creations!
