Just When You Thought Chris Hadfield Could Not BEE Any Cooler!

To begin with, we at the GCCB are huge fans of Chris Hadfield! Just recently at GCCB headquarters we viewed Colonel Hadfield's Masterclass on space exploration. If you want to really get a great insight into the hard work of life as an astronaut, this is a must see!! He is truly a Canadian original.....even cooler.....he is a Canadian original with a species of bee named after him!

The Royal Saskatchewan Museum's curator of invertebrate zoology, Cory Sheffield was cataloguing insect specimens in a collection, and after examining one particular specimen more than once, he determined it to be a new species of bee.

Then Cory did the most Canadian thing of all, instead of naming the amazing find after himself, he named it after Chris Hadfield.

Cory stated “After I had finished my research on the specimen and confirmed that it was indeed a new species, I thought of Colonel Hadfield, someone I have immense respect for."

After asking Colonel Hadfield for permission, he named the new species Andrena hadfieldi. The find is now published in Journal of Hymenoptera Research and official!

You can read all about Cory Sheffield's discovery and his selfless decision to name it after Chris Hadfield in Journal of Hymenoptera Research. You can also read more about this incredible find here.
